About

CYJULERC was founded by Ayuk Esther in 2003(Registration No. 237G37/D.14/1/VOL8/I/OAPP of 03/05/2005) when she realized the urgent need for the promotion of human rights in Cameroon.

Most Cameroonians are ignorant of the laws governing them and there can be no genuine democracy if the citizens are not educated and sensitized on the rules and regulations in force. There is a lot of abuse of the basic fundamental rights of citizens. People are ignorant of most of the international human rights instruments and other numerous specific instruments that Cameroon has ratified. For this reason, their basic human rights are grossly violated and often with impunity.

Women in Cameroon still undergo discriminatory traditional, customary and cultural practices, such as female genital mutilation, girl-child marriage, and breast ironing. They are also very poor because many do not have the opportunity to go to school and so depend solely on the men for subsistence.

Many children are also abandoned by their parents and that is why there are many children in the streets of major cities in Cameroon. These children are arrested and detained in violation of the special laws that protect them partly because law enforcement officers are ignorant of the provisions of the relevant laws and also because the children do not have counsel to represent them.

Advocacy for legislation and to influence state policy is one of CYJULERC main activity which is why CYJULERC has succeeded to influence the state to adopt the series of laws on women’s and children’s rights.

in all fields

Women's Human Rights

Women’s human rights and gender equality in particular remain a major cause for concern 26 years after the ratification of CEDAW in August 1994 by Cameroon.

Children's Rights

In Cameroon, children are victims of all forms of abuse and neglect including trafficking, bondage, sexual violence, corporal punishment and exploitation.

Advocacy

Discriminatory and inhumane practices like female genital mutilation, debt bondage, breast ironing, girl-child marriage, girl-child slavery

Empowerment

We promote general empowerment of rural women and organize community groups for aid.
Empowering women is synonymous to asserting and achieving women’s rights, that is why CYJULERC has embarked on providing sustainable livelihoods, and economic empowerment of marginalized communities. CYJULERC has been running a micro-credit scheme to fund small businesses for women, training women internally displaced by conflict in sustainable relief agribusinesses, organizing the collection and marketing of non timber forest products (NTFPs) and promoting sustainable environmental and forestry practices through sustainable harvesting and reforestation. For over ten (10) years, CYJULERC worked with, and organized women and NTFP farmers in Manyu Division into a Cooperative called CYNFACOOP).
