African Bush Mango (Irvingia Gabonensis/ Wombulu)
The Manyu Division is home to the two species of the African Mango tree known by its scientific names as Irvingia Gabonensis (sweet fruit) and Irvingia Wombulu (bitter fruit). Both trees grow wildly in the dense Manyu forest. The fruity tree, also known locally as “Bush mango tree, andok, obono” is regarded as a cash crop for women in the Manyu region. Women rely to a very large extend on it, for income and livelihoods for their families.
The wild African Mango is a multipurpose tree; the crushed seeds are a staple food; the cold pressed butter provides a rich organic substance for skin and healthcare; the huge canopy over a 100 meter tall tree fights climate change; and domesticated seedlings are used for reforestation of the Manyu forest depleted by over 80 years of logging.
