CYJULERC is a predominantly feminist membership nongovernmental, nonprofit organization working to promote women and children’s human rights, and the empowerment of marginalized communities in Cameroon. For close to two decades, CYJULERC has contributed to achieving legislation to criminalize the worst forms of discriminatory cultural practices against women, promoted juvenile justice and children’s education, and contributed to the empowerment of women and their families.

Gathering and preservation of evidence is crucial to holding perpetrators of sexual violence accountable. In response to the high rate of sexual and gender based violence in the conflict stricken regions of Cameroon, CYJULERC has been building capacity of community-based organizations (CBOs), medical staff and lawyers to provide psychosocial, medical and legal support to victims. So far, we have trained 118 stakeholders and 103 cases have been assisted in 18 months. “Our challenge as a predominantly female jurists’ organization is to ensure all victims of sexual violence in conflict in Cameroon are given the necessary support and all perpetrators held accountable.” Justice Esther Ayuk, founder, CYJULERC.

Cognizance of the power of information and the importance of ICTs to the development of marginalised communities, CYJULERC constructed a multimedia centre to serve the remote marginalized region of Manyu with over 63,000 inhabitants who have suffered great deprivation of information for over 50 years, and with most of its inhabitants living below poverty line. The centre consists of a community radio, a public secretariat, production studio and a cyber cafe.
